Southern Folk Medicine, 1750-1820

Southern Folk Medicine, 1750-1820 explores methods of cure during a time when the South relied more heavily on homespun remedies than on professionally prescribed treatments. Medical books Southern Folk Medicine, 1750-1820. Bringing to light several previously unpublished primary sources, Kay K. Moss inventories the medical ingredients and practices adopted by physicians, herb women, yeoman farmers, plantation mistresses, merchants, tradesmen, preachers, and quacks alike. Moss shows how families passed down cures as heirlooms, how remedies crossed cultural and ethnic boundaries, and how domestic healers compounded native herbs and plants with exotic ingredients. Moss assembles her picture of domestic medical practice largely from an analysis of twelve commonplace books--or repositories of information, medical and otherwise--kept by eighteenth- and nineteenth-century southerners Medical books 2010-05-15, Southern Folk Medicine, 1750-1820, Kay K. Moss assembles her picture of domestic medical practice largely from an analysis of twelve commonplace books--or repositories of information, medical and otherwise--kept by eighteenth- and nineteenth-century southerners. She reveals that men and women of all social classes collected medical guidance and receipts in handwritten journals. Whether well educated or unlettered, many preferred home remedies over treatment by the region's few professional physicians.
Of particular interest to natural historians, an extensive guide to medicinal plants, their scientific names, and their traditional uses is also included.

While even the most dedicated fans of alternative medicine aren't likely to run out and sip a tea made of hog manure these days, Country Folk Medicine still offers up plenty of useful suggestions--and charm. Collected by interviews with more than 1400 senior citizens, remedies are related in story form. Who knew that skunk hunting was considered a romantic date at one time? Author Elizabeth Janus has arranged the tales by type of complaint, which, along with keeping the wide-ranging antidotes well organized, also makes it actually usable as a reference guide for specific illnesses. Some, like sipping kerosene or substituting a pork fat poultice for a needed tetanus shot, are best used for historical value only. Others--like ginger tea for a cold or a dab of clove oil to sooth a sore tooth before your next dentist visit--are still recommended by many modern herbalists. The last few pages include an index that list specific pages for particular remedies. For sheer historical delight, it's hard to beat the charm of this compilation, with a minor caveat: these are all medical stories, and quite a few begin with very unfortunate accidents around the house. --Jill Lightner
