Soon every village had at least one barefoot doctor to provide basic medicalcare, which integrated the villages into a regional network of healthcare services for the very first time. The barefoot doctors were portrayed nationally and internationally as revolutionary heroes, wading undaunted through rice-paddies to bring effective, low-cost care to poor peasants. This book is the first comprehensive study to reach beyond the nostalgic view of barefoot doctors that dominates present scholarship on public health in China.Author Xiaoping Fang provides evidence drawn from local archives during the Cultural Revolution and personal interviews with patients and doctors, contextualizing it within the broader history of medicine in revolutionary and post-reform China. His data demonstrates that the key impact of the barefoot doctor program was its introduction of modern Western medicine into villages that were hitherto dominated by traditional Chinese medicine. Although traditional methods were marginalized by the innovations and improved outcomes Western medicine brought, Chinese medicine continued to exist as an alternative approach. This book ultimately offers a powerful and carefully contextualized critique of conventional views on the role of barefoot doctors, their legacy, and their impact, both in rural areas and in China as a whole, while making theoretical contributions to the Chinese social historiography of medicine. Xiaoping Fang is a research fellow in the China Research Centre of the University of Technology in Sydney, Australia.

Medical Book Cell Mechanics, Volume 83

Cells communicate with each other through chemical and physical signals which are involved in a range of process from embryogenesis and wound healing to pathological conditions such as cancerous invasion. Similar principles are also likely to be critical for success in regenerative medicine. Cell mechanics is thus central to understanding these principles. As cell mechanics draws from the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, and mathematics, this book aims not only to provide a collection of research methods, but also to develop a common language among scientists who share the interest in cell mechanics but enter the field with diverse backgrounds. To this end all of the contributing authors have sought to explain in plain language the nature of the biological problems, the rationale for the approaches, in addition to the methods themselves. In addition, to balance practical utility against conceptual advances, the book has intentionally included both chapters that provide detailed recipes and those that emphasize basic principles.

* Presents a distinctive emphasis on matrix mechanics and their interplay with cell functions
* Includes highly significant topics relevant to basic and translational research, as well as tissue engineering
* Emphasizes mechanical input and output of cells

Computers built from DNA, bacteria, or foam. Robots that fix themselves on Mars. Bridges that report when they are aging. This is the bizarre and fascinating world of Natural Computing. Computer scientist and Scientific American’s “Puzzling Adventures” columnist Dennis Shasha here teams up with journalist Cathy Lazere to explore the outer reaches of computing. Drawing on interviews with fifteen leading scientists, the authors present an unexpected vision: the future of computing is a synthesis with nature. That vision will change not only computer science but also fields as disparate as finance, engineering, and medicine. Space engineers are at work designing machines that adapt to extreme weather and radiation. “Wetware” processing built on DNA or bacterial cells races closer to reality. One scientist’s “extended analog computer” measures answers instead of calculating them using ones and zeros. In lively, readable prose, Shasha and Lazere take readers on a tour of the future of smart machines. 50 illustrations

It also provides greatly enriched material on legal aspects of personal health services, including right of privacy, recent abortion and "right to die"cases, and an expanded discussion of law and policy governing HIV/AIDS. There is also an in-depth analysis of the new HIPPA Privacy Rule providing the first national standards for certain individually identifiable health data. An important new chapter covers the need for Public International Concern-a sweeping review of examples of the principal international agencies, treaties, legal instruments and documents on international public health policies including SARS, bioterrorism, ozone depletion, and global warming.
